I do not read a lot of Christian fiction. Unfortunately most books in the genre tend to be historical fiction or cheesy romances. I love an Amish love story as much as the next girl, but there are only so many you can read before the stories grow stale.
The “Sensible Shoes” books don’t fit that stereotype. I just finished the final book in the series (An Extra Mile) and will probably read the series again!
Set in modern day Michigan, you are invited to follow the spiritual journey of 4 unlikely friends. Mara, Hannah, Meg, and Charissa (and eventually Becca) come from varied backgrounds and represent different generations. Each character is at a different point in their spiritual journey, their struggles are as varied as their backgrounds. That is where the beauty of the story comes in. I have never struggled with barrenness or being in a loveless marriage, however, while I can’t empathize and I sympathize. In addition to a powerful fictional story about friendship and God’s love, scripture and guided reflection are weaved throughout the story. You can choose to immerse yourself in the story or take time to ponder your own spiritual journey. Beautifully written!
Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
